Next steps after your ham radio exam

If this is your first license

1. Save your results email and Certificate of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE).
2. Track your application with the WEARC FRN lookup and the FCC ULS application search.
3. Pay the separate $35 FCC application fee directly to the FCC through CORES. The payment window is 10 calendar days from the date the FCC application file number is issued.
4. Watch for the FCC payment email, including in spam folders. You do not need to wait for that email if your application is already in the FCC system.
5. Confirm your callsign and license grant in the FCC ULS database before operating as the control operator of your own station. A CSCE alone does not authorize a first-time applicant to transmit.

If you upgraded an existing license

1. Save the CSCE showing the elements you passed and verify that the VE team has your correct existing callsign and FRN.
2. Track the application and confirm your new license class in the FCC ULS database.
3. Do not expect a $35 payment request for an ordinary license-class upgrade. Other application types, such as a vanity callsign request or renewal, have separate fee rules.

Existing licensees who meet 47 CFR § 97.9(b) may use temporary upgraded privileges while their application is pending, until final disposition or 365 days after passing, whichever comes first. When using those privileges, follow the station identification requirements: append /AG for General or /AE for Amateur Extra. Ask the VE team if you are unsure whether you qualify.
